LBW History Part 2

Well it’s Christmas Eve and time for chapter two of the history of LOOK BOTH WAYS. Below is a picture of Victoria Hursh and the late Joe Hursh, two of the 4 founding members of LBW. Sadly, Joe passed away from a massive heart attack a few years ago when he was just #40 years young. My youngest son, James, graduated from CSU (Ft Collins) in December, 2004 and asked if my band would play at his graduation party being held at the Morrison Inn on December 16. We had only been practicing for a few weeks and barely had a few songs learned as a group. We ended up saying yes, and by December 16, we new 6-7 songs well enough to play them in public, this was our first gig. At this point, we didn’t have a drummer or a band name, and we only had about 25 minutes worth of music. We ended up playing our 7 songs at the start of the party, and again near the end of the party. Since everyone at the party was either a friend or a family member, we had a fairly excepting audience. Everyone seemed to like us which was a great boost to our ego. We wanted to expand the band by adding a drummer and possibly a keyboard player. Dave Pyle had a friend that had been playing drums for only a few years, and like me, he started his music career late in life. Even though Dan McCutchen didn’t have a lot of experience, he was a hell of a nice guy and a lot of fun. At almost the same exact time, Jeff Quinlan, who practiced with us twice in November, before quitting and starting his own band, recommended Paul Millradt as a possible keyboard player he new from his church. We ended up hiring both Dan and Paul within a week of each other at the end of January, 2005. Now, starting in February, 2005, we had a 6 piece band, with Dan McCutchen on drums, Paul Millradt on keys, Joe Hursh on rhythm guitar, Dave Pyle on bass and vocals, John Purvis on lead guitar and Victoria Hursh on vocals. Now all we needed was a name, a set list of more than 7 songs and a place to perform. Wrigley’s Chicago – June 7, 2019


After an impressive downpour, the clouds parted and LBW kicked off at 5:15. There were 5 tables reserved by fans but we didn’t know if the rain had scared them away. But we shouldn’t have worried! An excellent vibe on the deck propelled dancers for 4 hours. Along the way we celebrated 3 birthdays, and the band would like to give a shout out to Wrigley’s ambassador Mary for her spirit and great idea to dry off Tom’s soaked shirt under the hand drier in the men’s room. We met some neat people from South Dakota but the winner of the furthest distance to the gig was won by Sean who came all the way from Chicago.

American Legion September 8, 2017

Our fans at the American Legion were in for a treat on September 8 as LBW pals Paul Jerothe sat in on Sax and Dave D’Angelo sat in on drums! The dance floor never emptied in two epic 1 1/2 hour sets featuring 44 songs and much sweating by the delighted crowd!

Wrigleys and Newlyweds

Look Both Ways played at Wrigleys on the patio Friday night and we helped celebrate a wedding after party, as well as an early 40th birthday for my daughter in law, Stephanie. Here is a pic of the band getting ready and the newlyweds dancing. We all had a great time.  The weather cooperated with a nice cloud cover to cool things off a bit.

The May birthday party was a rockin’ time

The May birthday party was a rockin’ time.  When May 27 rolled around and the weather forecasters were predicting rain all day, John, our band leader, called to see if they wanted to cancel.   Their answer was “we are partying outside come rain or shine.”  That was all we needed.  We packed our gear in the rain and drove to their beautiful mansion of a house.   Luckily, it stopped raining off and on enough for us to get set up under two tents.  About 15 minutes before we were to start, we wondered what kind of at gig this would turn out to be.   Then, when we started playing, it stopped raining and never rained again, the whole night.   What a great gig.

GI Jodi’s in April

It was great to see the big turnout Friday night at GI Jodi’s! In particular keyboardist/trombonist Paul had his fans on speed dial. And when he went out in the audience with the ‘bone they went delirious! Good to see Shari and Dave too, their friend tried hard to fit in Tom’s trademark blue jacket!

GI Jodi’s in March

GI Jodi’s was a pretty wild scene in March.   This photo was taken around 2:00 p.m. in the morning and things were still popping.  We used “old school” P.A. settings with an analog mixer amp and everybody liked it.  We mixed up the songs and played what everybody wanted.  Good times!  In the picture from left to right is Randy Becker – Guitar, Tom Stockard – Bass, and Dan McCutchen – Drums.   (Where is John Purvis – Guitar?).  The guys behind were some crazy fans having a great time at GI Jodi’s.

St. Bernadette

St. Bernadette Catholic church and school hosted a fundraiser at the Denver West Marriott hotel last night.  We really enjoyed playing for that event.   The venue was really good, big stage and dance floor and easy access from our truck to the stage.

We set up in a different configuration that seemed to work really well.  Dan set up stage left, then Tom stage center left, then John stage center, then me stage center right, then Paul stage right.  I liked that arrangement because I didn’t need to depend on the PA to hear John and Paul.  Speaking of the PA, we had some initial problems with our new digital mixer.  It would not connect to our laptop.  This is not the first time we ran into this problem.   Luckily, the mixer was already balanced and although we couldn’t make changes, it still worked.   We will need to work on this to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

The crowd was really great.   As usual, we pulled them on to the dance floor right away and played until 11:15 with someone on the dance floor the whole time.  Due to a late start (at 9:15) waiting for the auction to begin, we just threw all our songs into one big set and played without a break.   But I didn’t mind.   Everyone was having such a good time, I really didn’t want to take a break.
